June 2, 2005 (La Trinite sur mer, France) The second day of racing at
the
Mumm 30 World Championship mirrored the first - a long postponement
ashore
with a beautiful afternoon of racing in sunshine and a light westerly
breeze. Two more windward leeward races were run, with four legs
each.
Louis Browne and his seasoned team on board the British boat Asterix
sit
firmly atop the leader board and finished the day with their first
bullet of
the event. Their fifteen point lead is not insurmountable, but they
are
not making mistakes and will be difficult to catch.
The first race of the day went to the French crew aboard Alpes
Maritimes,
chartered by Sylvain Chtounder with Nicolas Novara at the helm and Mumm
30
owner Peter Bonham Christie crewing. They had a good start and got
out to
the favored left side early to take the lead. Asterix caught up to
them by
the first leeward mark rounding, but Browne split away to go right and
Alpes
Maritimes regained their lead on the left and kept it for the rest of
the
race. There was plenty of jostling at the mark roundings with large
packs
of boats fighting for the same piece of water in many languages.
More breeze is forecast for Day 3, and it is expected that racing will
start
on time with up to four races if there is sufficient breeze.
Thanks to event sponsors Champagne Mumm, North Sails, Armor Lux, the
Port of
La Trinite sur Mer, the Conseil General of Morbihan and the region of
Brittany.
