Farr 30 BC Fleet sails at the bbVancouver.com Spring Regatta, held in Vancouver, BC on April 17-18, 2010
A record turnout of seven Farr 30's from the BC Fleet sailed as a one design class at this weekend's 2010 bbVancouver.com Spring Regatta, held in English Bay adjacent to Vancouver, BC, Canada. During the regatta, the Farr 30 BC Fleet welcomed its newest member, Bruce Chan's boat 65 Wild Roses. Racing was very tight with the top three boats locked in a three way points tie going into the last race.
False Creek Yacht Club's race officer Court Touwslager squeezed in four races on Saturday in overcast and damp conditions with an Easterly wind of 8-12 knots, flat water and a large ebb. All four races were windward-leeward and twice around. Three boats had bullets on Saturday - Andrew Hamilton's boat Through took two while Richard Alban's boat Spiny Norman and David Sutcliffe's boat Kinetic IV took one each. Darren Burn's boat Idiopathic was the most consistent with a 2-2-2-3 scoreline. Racing was very tight as the closely matched boats fought for every shift and advantage. A few protest flags flew, and some One Turn Penalties were taken on the water instead of boats going to "the room". The RC had some close calls to make as boats went through the finish line side by side. By the time that racing was finished for the day Saturday, there was a three-way points tie at the top of the fleet. After tie-breaking, the Saturday results were Through - First, Spiny Norman - Second and Idiopathic - Third.
Sunday morning the wind was a little lighter, Easterly 6-10 knots, with the sky clearing as the day progressed. Once again, racing was windward-leeward, twice-around in flat water. During the first race of the day, the wind faded on the first run and the fleet crept down to the leeward mark expecting the race to be shortened. It wasn't. The RC's crystal ball accurately brought the wind back and the race went the full twice-around. The second race of the day was another light air race, following which the top three boats were once again in a three way points tie for the lead for the weekend. It all came down to Sunday's third and final race, the seventh of the weekend. The warning signal was made with the wind still blowing a light Easterly; meanwhile, an afternoon Westerly was belatedly filling in below the course. The race started in the remaining Easterly and within a few minutes the fleet transitioned to spinnakers as the Westerly swept rapidly up the course, 180 degrees opposed to the wind it replaced. The lead changed quickly several times as the wind speed built to over 15 knots and the Farr 30's lit up and took off! Rounding the weather mark, now a leeward mark, boats that had hurriedly changed headsails and shifted gears were rewarded by a beat in 15-20 knots with some higher gusts. An anchored freighter slewed around in the new breeze and cast a wind shadow close to the leeward mark, now the weather mark. Another lap of the course with a Farr 30 style fun run followed by a breezy beat concluded Sunday's racing. The top three results for Sunday were Idiopathic - First, Spiny Norman - Second and Through - Third.
The final awards for the weekend were: Idiopathic - First, Spiny Norman - Second and Through - Third. Results are also online at: http://www.fcyc.com/wp-
