Just Weeks away From The Launch Of Deauville International Week
SIRIUS EVENEMENTS – Press Release No. 5 on 15th May 2006

With less than 4 weeks to go to the first edition of Deauville International Week, which will be held from 7th to 11th June, all the elements of this new top level international rendez-vous are in place.

To date, 75 teams have registered in the open classes; nearly half of which are international crews from all across Europe, as well as the United States and Australia. A staggering 10 nationalities will be represented at the event, making it the top level international series it was intended to be.

In the Mumm 30 class around thirty or so crews are expected at this the European Championship for the series. Crews from the French circuit preparing for the Tour de France à la Voile will do battle with the international crews from the United Kingdom, Germany and Holland.

For the Melges 24, Deauville International Week will play host to the series’ National Open; a first step forward in the construction of a new international rendez-vous dedicated to Northern Europe. 20 to 25 crews are set to race in Deauville in a year marked by the preparation for the World Championship 2006 in August in Hyères, Southern France.

The J Boats have also answered the call with 30 to 40 crews set to represent the series. The J 80’s are particularly popular in the Baie de Seine area of France, while the J 105’s and the J 109’s are a favourite with the English, the latter contending the first European Cup.

Finally two other classes will complete the series; the 747 OD, firmly established in Normandy, and the 40 foot class (Beneteau 40.7, IMX 40, Dufour 40…).

The local Norman clubs will be out in force in Deauville with support from the Ligue Basse-Normandie (Lower Normandy League) and the local Calvados Committee of the FF.Voile (French Sailing Federation): the Deauville Yacht Club and the Société des Régates du Havre and Caen-Ouistreham (Le Havre and Caen-Ouistreham Racing Societies).

The Royal Southern Yacht Club in the Hamble, Southern England, is providing its support with the presence of its ‘race manager’, Tony Lovell and various English judges, which represent half the Race Committee. Finally the SNSM (French equivalent of the RNLI) is also providing assistance from its stations in Honfleur, Touques and Dives sur Mer.

The commitment of the local authorities, the Town of Deauville, the Calvados area, the Lower Normandy Region and the Pays d’Auge CCI has enabled the launch of the event, with support from some top ranking media partners (Ouest-France, France Bleu from Upper and Lower Normandy, Voiles et Voiliers).
