Day 1:
Key West, FL - Conditions at Key West could not be better for sailboat racing right now. Under sunny skies at 75 degrees, 10 Mumm 30s have just completed the first race at Acura Key West 2007. The wind has been steady at 12 to 15 knots.
At the finish of race 1In a close fought battle, Armando Giulietti's Calvi / Hiroshi edged Nelson Stephenson's Team BOLD to capture the gun in the first race of the series. Bodo von der Wense's Turbo Duck crossed the line third followed by Bruce Eddington's Southern Sun, Peter deRidder's Mean Machine, and Deneen Demourkas' Groovederci.
In Race 2, Calvi / Hiroshi completed the day 1 sweep and opened a 6 point lead over Groovederci, Mean Machine and Southern Sun, who are all tied for second. The fleet remained very tight throughout the day, indicatiing that many changes are in store for the rest of the week. Here are the unofficial day 1 results:
Day 2:
Nelson Stephenson's Team Bold came back from a disappointing eigth place in yestrerday's second race to take the gun in race three, leading wire to wire. Deneen Demourkas' Groovederci and Geoff Brown's Mummy started the race strong onteh laeft side of the course, but wind shifts at the top af the first beat left them rounding int he middle of the pack. Theoughout the race, the wind shifted right as the Easterly breeke filled in over the course.
While the light conditions persisted in Key West, the Mumm 30 fleet continued to be close and unpredictable in race four. Bruce Eddington's Southern Sun finally broke it's string of fourth place finishes to take the bullet and move up to second place overall, just three points behind Armando Giulietti's Hiroshi, which scored its worst finish of the event thus far with a sixth. Team Bold scored a fourth to secure third place, barely ahead of Mean Machine, Groovederci, and Turbo Duck.
With six teams separated by only seven points, the Mumm30 fleet is proving to be the most competitive fleet at Acura Key West 2007. Stay tuned!
Day 3:
The wind is moderate and shifty for day three of Acura Key West 2007 and the results in the Mumm 30 class remain unpredictable. Bodo von der Wense's Turbo Duck has taken the gun in race number five to vault from sixth to second overall, edging peter de Ridder's Mean Machine by virtue of a tie breaker. Strong Performances were registered in race number 5 by Kevin Young's Black Seal team in third and the Chick/ Elam / Diemand syndicate's USA 41 in fifth. Armando Giulietti's Calvi / Hiroshi still holds the overall lead with a tight back close behind.
In race six, Bruce Eddington's Southern Sun again closed out the day with a bullet and moved back into second place overall. After three days of racing, only two points separate the top three boats.
After racing, a protest was held and Calvi / Hiroshi was disqualified from race 5, Opening the door for Southern Sun to take the overall lead
Day 4:
Shifty conditions and forieign dominance carry through to day 4 of Acura Key West 2007. After a second and a first on Thursday, overnight leader Souther Sun has stretched to a four point lead going into the final race on Friday. Thursday's boat of the day winner nkows that it still has to perform at it's best. "Tomorrow is a big day as we know anything can happen in sailboat racing," states owner Bruce Eddington. The other two podium spots are currently held by Peter de Ridder's Mean Machine of the Netherlands and Armando Giulietti's Calvi/Hiroshi of Italy.
